- pH is a measure of how acidic/basic water is, the range goes from 0 to 14. It is essential to check pH from time to time as our fishes may die if the pH goes low or if the pH goes high. The best pH level for our fishes is 7 to 7.5, if the pH goes below 6.5 then the fishes may die. Also if the pH goes above 8.5 then the fishes may start dying. So it is necessary to check the pH frequently.

More Information
pH measures the acidity or alkalinity of water. A pH value of 7 is neutral, with lower numbers increasing in acidity and higher number increasing in alkalinity.
The tap water that fills most aquariums generally has a pH between 6.5 and 7.5. However, pH can drift over time, so testing aquarium water regularly is important. Sometimes you need to treat the water to support healthy aquatic populations.
And, you should check pH at least once a week, to allow for the detection of trends before they become a problem.
Besides, Fish and other aquatic animal and plant life require the water they live in to be a certain pH level in order to be healthy. And, If the pH level is too low or too high, it can make fish sick, even kill them. A low pH means that the water is acidic; a high pH means that the water is alkaline.
More Information
Simultaneously, The aquarium itself will often reveal signs of high alkalinity as well. You may notice a sudden increase in green algae growth on the walls and ornaments in the tank. High pH levels encourage the growth of this algae and slime, which will thickly coat the plants and fixtures, making the water highly toxic for fish.
Above all, If the pH of water is too high or too low, the aquatic organisms living within it will die. pH can also affect the solubility and toxicity of chemicals and heavy metals in the water. As pH levels move away from this range (up or down) it can stress animal systems and reduce hatching and survival rates.
